JOHANNINGER was founded in the year 1994 by the Haas and Schufried families. The establishment had been preceded by a longtime friendship between Markus Haas and Dieter Schufried. Since then we have united our own culture for wine and indulgence in our wine estate and thereby created our personal exhilarated philosophy of life.
Biebelsheim, a small village of winemakers, situated between Bingen and Bad Kreuznach, is the home of our wine estate.
This geographical location is determined by our traditional ownership of vineyards in the producing regions of the river Nahe and the region of Rheinhessen which are in the close vicinity of the manor.
The vineyards surrounding the “Biebelsheimer Kieselberg” (Biebelsheimer flint hill) are covered at the foot of the slope by a layer of loam.
The higher levels consist of bench gravel. For a long time, this area has been dominated by Riesling and Silvaner grapes. The slope itself opens towards the South and is populated by Sauvignon Blanc, Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner) and Huxelrebe grapes as well as the red grapes Pinot Noir and St. Laurent.
Our producing region is split between Rheinhessen with approximately 24 acres and the area of the lower Nahe with approximately 17 acres.
The clay marl soil at the Nahe is rich in lime (up to 20 percent) and therefore ideal to grow Burgundy/Pinot grapes. Our main grape here is Pinot Noir followed by Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. From Pinot Noir Précoce we produce very rich rosé and red wines.
To be a vintner means for us to love nature. This is an obligation and a vocation at the same time.
As a result, we have been following the guidelines of environmentally friendly viticulture already since 1997. Consequently, with our harvest in 2013, we completed a three-year transformation period to become organic winemakers.
Our grapes are mainly harvested by hand and carefully processed. Nearly all our wines are developed in our deep, arch-cellars as dry wines. This is also the location of our small manufacture of sparkling wine (“Sekt”). All sparkling wine is solely produced using the classical method of fermentation in the bottle.
Part of our estate is the distillery that our senior, Hans Haas, is the master of. Here solely marcs are distilled. Hans watches closely that only marcs of the highest quality leave the distillery.
We are a member of ECOVIN (National Association for Ecological/Organic Winemaking). Since 2012 all our red wines and since 2014 all our white wines are vegan. To learn more what this means click here.

Our fallow lands are vineyards, usually populated with vegetable plants for up to ten years which are cultivated with interim plants until replanted with vines.
Annual output: 120 thousand bottles of wine and 20 thousand bottles of sparkling wine.

Grapes: Due to the region most grapes in the Nahe area are Burgundies/Pinots as well as Chardonnay and Scheurebe. In Rheinhessen, the main grapes are Riesling, Rivaner, St. Laurent and Sauvignon Blanc.
Vinification: Most our wines are produced as dry wines with the exception of dessert wines which have a delicate sweetness (such as the Beerenauslese quality).
